The Truth About Pinkberry

Inline Image

Although Pinkberry is a better choice than other trendy fro-yo places out there thanks to its probiotic packed all natural ingredients, not all cups at Pinkberry are good choices. Sure Pinkberry’s most popular original flavor is only 29 calories an ounce, but have you ever thought to ask how many ounces are in each cup size? Here’s the lowdown:

  • Mini, 3.6 oz = 104.4 calories
  • Small, 6 oz = 174 calories
  • Medium, 9.2 oz = 266.8 calories
  • Large, 15.2 oz = 440.8 calories

And those calories are for the original flavor with no toppings! All other flavors, with the exception of Passion Fruit which is the lowest calorie flavor, are higher calorie than the original. (Just a note, Pinkberry does not make it easy to figure out the calories per serving cup, we used the limited nutrition info provided on the site and did the math for you!)

Pinkberry recently began to offer “unlimited toppings” - this doesn’t mean you have to take full advantage. Toppings range from 5-100 calories per scoop, so do the math to see how many calories you’re adding to your yogurt.

If you need a strategy when you walk into Pinkberry, have no qualms about thinking in terms of boobs. Best to stick with the A cup (mini) and the natural toppings (fruit) so you can enjoy a treat in the realm of 120 calories, and avoid the D cup (med/large) with all the fake stuff, which could cost you up to 1,000 calories.

Smoothie Specifics

Inline Image

Lauren is smoothie obsessed, she outlined some smoothie suggestions for those of you new to smoothie making. Smoothies are a great way to get protein, fiber, fluid and antioxidants all in one glass to start your day. You’ll need:

  • PROTEIN: Tera’s Whey Protein, Socal Cleanse Detox Powder, Nutiva Hemp Protein or Spirutein Whey
  • FROZEN FRUIT: Try Cascadian Farms frozen fruit or freeze peaches, berries, mango or bananas yourself. (Note if you use fresh fruit, add ice to your smoothie for optimum consistency)
  • LIQUID: filtered water is fine or try almond milk, coconut water or even green tea.
  • FUN FLAVORS: cinnamon, cardamom, fresh mint, lemon zest, vanilla extract or cocoa powder.
  • BLENDING: Any blender with ice crushing capability, great little contraptions called shake and take or magic bullets allow you to blend and then the cup is removable for portability or when away from home try  Blender Bottle

Be creative, there are no rules to smoothie making. Be sure to check out Foodtrainers blog for our “Smoothest Hits” recipes this week.
